Planetary

Explore the depths of a seemingly endless universe.  Create planets, generate resources, and earn experience to upgrade your player and explore further. Watch out for enemy squadrons, asteroid fields, and other dangers. Make use of the shop, traders, and friendlies to help you get further.

Planetary is a 2D space game/base builder that allows you to explore a vast universe. You can destroy planets outside of your home to collect resources. Bring those resources back home to sell or save and combine to create new planets in your home that will generate resources over time. Discover and create the end game planet in your home to win the game.

Quests will help guide you through the chaotic universe and give valuable experience, money, and upgrade rewards. You can use levels to progress through a skill tree. You can use money at traders or the shop. The Almanac keeps a record of discovered planet recipes(any planet in space can be created by combining three of its resource in your home planet).

A game is quite random, which can lead to very different playthroughs, depending on the game generated. Our universes are randomly generated upon game creation and a grid system is used to limit the planets displayed. This is something that is continuously tweaked, and feedback would be appreciated. Enemies spawn randomly around you and events occur at various time intervals. It is possible that you could beat the game without having an event occur.

Too tough? Use sandbox mode to get used to the controls while having unlimited skill points and money at your disposal.

Give yourself a challenge with our hardcode mode. WARNING may not be possible, no one knows...

With such a vast universe, the game can take a long time to fully complete. Use the save feature to save your progress and explore again at a later date.

***NOTE*** The save feature is disabled on the web version of the game. Please download a free copy if you would like to save your progress!

Tutorials:

We have made several tutorials to help you navigate through our game and become the first to save the universe! They have been added as tutorial devlog posts, but since we are unsure how to view them, we are putting the links here as well 😊. There is also an in-game tutorial if you prefer.

This game was created as a college project at the University of Iowa for the course Topics in Computer Science, taught by Professor Szecsei. Kian Weimer, Rys Huehnergarth, and Jeff Gordon were the main contributors. We have posted it here in hopes that others would be able to view our game and give feedback, all is appreciated! A lot of work was put into this during the past semester, hopefully, others can have some fun with our game.

We received a free lock image from a website, its quite nice, this is the message that they requested we put:

I love this game. It only takes about 3-4 hours to 'win' the game but after that you can keep exploring and upgrading your home base and ship.
